Augmented Reality Startup Magic Leap Raising $827 Million

Magic Leap wants to change your reality. And apparently they need a lot of money to do it.

The secretive augmented reality startup–think Google Glass meets Oculus Rift–is raising $827 million in a new Series C round, according to a Delaware filing obtained by FORBES from private market data provider VC Experts. Magic Leap’s new round could bring the company’s total funding to $1.4 billion, and its potential fully-diluted post-money valuation to $3.7 billion (based on the option pool and all shares being issued).

That would make Magic Leap one of the largest and most highly funded startups in the world–even though they have yet to release a product. Magic Leap’s promised “augmented reality” is even more ambitious than virtual reality efforts by Facebook’s Oculus and others because it promises to layer digital images on top of the real world through special eyeglasses. A few other companies, like Microsoft’s HoloLens, have demonstrated similar technology using stereoscopic techniques to create the illusion of 3D, but Magic Leap says it can project ”digital lightfields” into the user’s eyes for greater realism.

It is unclear at this time who has invested, although the round comes with a new board seat. A Magic Leap spokesperson declined FORBES’ request to comment on the filing.

Magic Leap has only given carefully staged demonstrations of its potential capabilities. In September, it released this video supposedly “shot directly through Magic Leap technology” with “no special effects”:

Been wonderful spending the last couple of days in muggy-NYC. Lots of great food and catching up with friends, and some fantastic evening adventures with this beautiful lady right here. We called an audible this evening and made reservations at a really nice spot for dinner. No jeans allowed, and men need to wear jackets. Of course I didn’t bring slacks on this trip, and a jacket? Ha. Anyway @apester07 busted her butt, went out and basically found a whole outfit for me this afternoon that I could wear to get into dinner tonight. Had me looking sharp in no time but like usual, it’s because of her that my life is together. Lesson learned - gotta keep some fancy stuff packed on future trips just in case. Reposting @apester07’s pic here also bc she takes better photos than I. (at Times Square, New York City)

Physical button re-orders household products when pressed

Just as e-commerce has largely removed the need for trips to a physical store, our next innovation may soon be enacting that same revolution on online stores. The Amazon Dash Button now enables shoppers to make repeated purchases without even going online. Users simply place the branded button somewhere in their home, connect it to their Amazon Prime account, and press it when they begin to run out of the associated product. Their order will then be fulfilled by the online shopping giant with free delivery. READ MORE…
